South Florida Sojurn

Back in mid-August, the girls and I headed to South Florida to take care of my mother, who has been very ill every since.  It was a challenging time (I will share more on that in a later blog) but despite, or in spite of her ill health, I wanted the girls to spend time with her as well as some of their family in Florida. It had been 2 1/2 years since the last visit to the Sunny State and two years since their aunt and uncle (along with Grandma Ruth) visited us here. Thus, we took advantage of our ill fortunate and about thirty-six hours after Alaska we headed South East. It was a bit of jetlag for a few days but the warm sun, the pools, yummy food and precious time with their family made it all worth it. Below are some of the highlights of our time there.

Aunt Kim took us to the top of the light house in downtown Key West. Amara said she was getting signs to climb it. Aunt Kim, who was born and raised there had never been to the top, so it was a first for us all. It was hot, humid, step but the view were so worth it.

Kino's a Key West classic. Handmade Cuban sandals, made in KW for decades, the girls Great Grandma Ruth wore them until she died. Aunt Kim has some and last winter I got a pair. The running joke is about the sandals not only being cute but a form of discipline (many a child's bottom was given a Kino smack!). We took the girls there and they both got a pair of their own!

Uncle Timmy. The girls adore their Tio.

Time with Tia Kim was priceless. Here they are in Hemingway House. All the sites were fantastic, rich with KW history and lore but being with their Tia, that was the highlight.

My kids love their Carib food as much as their parents!

First time paddle boarding!

My sisters and the girls.

With Aunt Natalie, who was showing them the underwater sea life!

My beautiful grandmother. I love Amara in background there!
It's not a trip to South Florida without a juice and tostones from El Placacio.

The girls with my bio-dad, checking out his Key Lime tree.
