While in Puetro Iguazu, we discovered that there were amethyst and crystal mines about 50 km from town. I had always associated these type of sacred stones to Brazil but it made sense since we just a stones throw (I couldn't help that!) from Brazil. While we didn't have the time to make it to the mines, I was thrilled that we would be able to make a stop one of the mine's shops located in town. Amara took the opportunity to practice her dramatic skills (I am referring to the photo above!)
The shop itself was a bit disappointing. They made stones into all types of touristy type gifts and jewelry, which felt sacreligious. At least we did get so see some of the larger pieces so the girls could learn what the stones look like when mined. We also got to buy a few raw pieces, sold by weight, for gifts for their teachers and a few to keep themselves.
