Guiraoga

While in Puetro Iguazu, we got to visit a very special wildlife refuge set in the thick rain forest. Guiraoga, is a special place, that for thirty years has helped the wildlife of the region (check out http://www.guiraoga.com.ar/ for more information). Set back in the bush, the wildlife are kept in settings which were much more humane and natural than zoos, shelters or other animal refuge centers I have visited. The committed staff try to rehab and release the animals, birds and reptiles whenever possible. Sometimes that is not possible so the refuge center becomes a permanent home.

We spent a good few hours at the center where we learned about the wildlife and a little about the rain forest that surrounds it. Because the kids were out of school for two weeks, this adventure was one that was more than educational for them. For Don and I as well. It is always a gift to be in  the rich, life giving rain forest. It was hot and humid but this was sacred ground. I want my girls to grow up understanding the power of the earth and all it's creatures. Outings like these plants seeds that I pray will take root and stay with them the rest of their lives. I want my girls to grow up honoring all life and what better way to install that, than by visiting places unfamiliar to them and getting up close to all types of wildlife that they would not get to see from their home in California.

This tractor, which was attached to the wagon where we sat, was our ride into the jungle.

This tree (seen below) lives to over a hundred years old. That is the age of the one I photographed.

Playful monkeys..

Havana took this picture of us. She did a great job.

Ocelot sleeping.

One of three species of eagles we saw. Ignorant me was unaware that there were other species of eagle than the bald eagle. The ones we saw were majestic. Unfortunately, these three royal birds had been hurt and could no longer fly. Thankfully they were well cared for in this compassionate jungle rehab.

This was our guide during our visit.

This dude was one serious bird. He kind of frightened me. He was powerful.

The toucan is by far by favorite bird. I was humbled to be able to get this close.
