Learning to Swim

In late winter, we started taking Amara to swim class at the Hilltop Y. We had talked about taking her for quite some time but each time we brought it up she told she, "I don't want to learn to swim." Respecting Amara's knowing of herself and where she is at, we waited. At the end of last year she told us, "I want to learn to swim."

I then spent a considerable amount of time looking for a local class that would be the right fit for Amara and our schedules. When she was about 12 months old we did one series at Canyon School. That was fine but the pool is outdoors and now we were in the cold months. The Y fit the bill and off we went!

Amara & Papa, age 12 months

For the first series Amara was the only student in the class so she got some great 1:1 time. Her buddy Eleanor joined her in the second series and now we are on our third. Amara was so proud to move up to the next level, which required putting her face in the water 3x. This was a challenge for Amara. Swimming is not something she loves. She is a little afraid of the water. The fact that she has willing attended class each Saturday for the past 5 months is commendable. My girl is brave. I love that she is trying something that has an edge for her.

Having Eleanor is both an encouragement & distraction. They love each other.
Practicing her kicks!
