Anchorage

We have landed in Alaska, the last frontier. A land rich with history and tradition. Some which we hope to learn about during our short visit here. As our family embarks upon our journey, in and around the Anchorage and Seward areas, our family will make some of its own history. This morning, thinking about traditions,  I asked a question to Don and the girls; "What is your favorite family tradition?"  Sadly, it turned out we did not have many. We decided we would start here in Anchorage. We have done some bike riding during other adventures and decided whenever possible, bike riding would be part of every trip moving forward. So on our first day, exhausted from a red eye flight and a few hours of sleep, we rented bicycles and hit the coastal trail, a short distance from our lodging.

During our first day we also experienced late sunsets (last night the sun set just before 11:00 pm), beautiful artwork (rich with history) in the historic Captain Cook hotel, swimming and hots tubs, food that hit the spot and people who are just plain nice. We were all taken aback how everyone we met were genuine, kind and open hearted. It was a breath of fresh year. That along with the striking mountains that surround this city made for a very good start.

Havana is still learning to ride. She rode tandem with her Papa Don.

These produced a lovely, sweet fragrance. Havana took some back to the room for her enchantimals.

The sun sets just before 11 pm and rises just before 6 am. That is a lot of light! I love it! I would not like the winters here, where the the dark hours switch with the summer sun.
